Wellington’s new petanque pitch was officially opened by Taunton Mayor Vivienne Stock-Williams this week. Wellington Mayor Bob Bowrah acknowledged the contributions of the Town Council, University of the Third Age (U3A), Community Leisure Officer Debbie Arscott and Executive Councillor for Sports, Parks and Leisure Cllr Catherine Herbert.
Cllr Stock-Williams cut the ribbon and joined a member of U3A in bowling the first petanque balls. Members of the Wellington Basins Volunteer Group provided tea and coffee.
The pitch, next to the Sports Centre, has been built following requests from Wellington residents supported by the Town Council and U3A. It was funded entirely from developer contributions of £16,000 for outdoor recreation from developments in the town.
Cllr Catherine Herbert said: “I hope this will be a well-used pitch in Wellington, adding to the sports centre, recreation field and other really good sports facilities locally.”
Tone Leisure has agreed to hold 2 sets of boules at Wellington Sports Centre.
