An emerging players team starring eleven of the Taunton area’s best schoolboys will play against some of Australia’s best young cricketing talent in a match at Wellington versus the New South Wales Academy.
Head of Cricket at Wellington School and former Somerset County Cricketer, Steffan Jones, came up with the idea which is backed by local business man and Somerset County Sports owner, Richard Brice.
The New South Wales Academy was set up eight years ago and has produced four full time New South Wales players and two Australian test cricketers, most notably Mitchell Starc.
Jones has identified emerging talent in the Taunton area over the last year and has put together four matches against the New South Wales side for schoolboys and a Taunton Town side made up from local club players from Taunton Deane, Taunton Vale and Taunton St Andrews Cricket Clubs, in the U14, U15 and U18 age group.
Jones said ‘As Head of cricket at Wellington School I have the luxury of observing a lot of talented young local cricketers. In partnership with Somerset County Sports I am bringing together a group of local players to play a high level fixture against the New South Wales Academy. This will give talented youngsters the opportunity to play against the best.’
