Wellington Football Club’s 3-1 victory over Chipping Sodbury Town on Saturday 10th February is a boost for the team’s progress in the Toolstation Premier League.
The Tangerines are now in 15th place after this win against a team lying several places above them. Wellington have 24 points and are in a comfortable position having played fewer matches than a number of the teams below them.
The club’s website recorded a very positive response to the match: “Great 3-1 win today for the 1sts against a very strong Chipping Sodbury side. Well done to both teams for playing some decent football on a difficult surface! Welly goals from Sam Towler, Tom Ellis and Conor Bryant who was named Man of the Match. Great to see Sam Bryant back in the side.”
As this was seen as a ‘must win game’ by Wellington’s opponents, the match was a test of the home side’s growing confidence and strength. The score was 1-1 at half-time after Sam Towler’s 32nd minute goal. Wellington’s second came early in the second half and the third put the match beyond the reach of the visitors.
The weather affected a number of fixtures and caused postponements but all those that were played attracted strong support. The number of spectators for Wellington’s match was just 32, the lowest in the league on the day.
Wellington’s next fixture is at home against Bridgwater in the Les Phillips Cup on Saturday 17th February when it is hoped the team will have more local support. Bridgwater recently registered seven days notice of approach to Sam Towler but a move was rejected by the player who has expressed his desire to stay with Wellington for the rest of the season.
