One of the closest and most competitive matches in this week’s Open Singles was between two very good bowlers. Nick Channon faced Mike Groves in a very competitive match which went to Groves by two shots, 21 – 19.
Vic Merrell struggled to find his form on a difficult rink against Martin Speakman who got the hang of it more quickly and went on to win, 21 – 4.
The New Players’ Singles
Alan May and Christine Willcocks had a good battle over 27 ends. Christine proved to be the better bowler on the day winning it 21 – 15.
Husband and wife Ian and Eileen Stewart enjoyed a close game against one another which Ian won in the end 21 – 15.
Vic Merrell played very well against Ian Kingsley but Ian’s consistently good bowling carried it for him after a close battle 22 – 19.
The Club Singles
Eddie Dilley did all he could in his match with Martin Speakman but Speakman kept the pressure on to win it 21 – 8.
The keen and enthusiastic Rod Troake has been bowling well of late but he found Denis Fullstone could prove to be very stiff opposition. After 24 ends Troake led 20 – 19 and looked to have the winning of it but Denis Fullstone picked up the two vital shots to pinch it on the line 21 – 20.
Mike Groves continued his winning ways with a convincing victory over Mike Connor 21 – 12.
Nick Channon had a good day against Vic Horne who struggled to find his game. Channon won comfortably 21 – 5.
The Two-Wood Singles
Richard Whiting played an excellent game against one of the club’s top bowlers, Paul Kelly. Richard set off at a good pace and Paul found himself playing catch-up all the way through and the game ended with just one shot between them 15 – 14 to Whiting.
Ian Thomson and Mike Groves had a very close game but Mike Groves came out of it the winner 15 – 12.
Rod Troake made up for his closely fought loss in the Club Singles by winning against Derek Vile in the 2 Wood, 16 – 7.
The Amy Stanton Pairs
There was a very close and competitive game between Derek Vile and Ernie Windsor v Yvonne Ede and Alec Ede. After thirteen ends the scores were level on 18 shots apiece but the Edes bowled well in the final two ends picking up the three shots needed to go through to the next round 21 – 18.
Father and son, Vic and Jay Merrell were in top form against Brian Wombwell and Geoff Stamp taking a comfortable victory 21 – 6.
The 4 Wood Handicap
Martin Speakman played well when he came up against excellent bowler Paul Kelly who could not find his best game on the day and went down 21 – 6.
Eddie Dilley came up against Alan May again this week, this time in the Handicap. Once again it was a close match and once again Eddie Dilley held on to take a 21 – 14 victory.
