Damage caused by vandals forced the Co-op to close for almost 24 hours. On Monday night water poured through the supermarket’s ceiling after a gang of youths broke into the flat above and turned on taps to flood the building.
Tills, freezer units and stock on shelves was affected by the water and staff had no option but to close the shop. “Apart from the damage itself, water in the electrical system means you can’t be sure what’s safe to touch,” said a staff member.
“We’ve had problems for quite a while with a gang of lads gathering on the landing outside the empty flats to drink and smoke but nothing like this,” she added.
Three flats above the Co op are reported to have been empty for several years and ownership recently changed hands at an auction sale. Co op staff are optimistic that the culprits may have been captured on CCTV cameras.
Last month the monthly police briefing reported to the town council that a gang of youths had been causing regular problems around Wellington with anti-social behaviour.
