Rain and strong winds provided an uncomfortable start to the traditional May Day in Wellington Park event but at least by late afternoon the sun was out and people were arriving for a dry final hour of music, stalls and refreshments.
“It’s a shame to have this weather for our biggest event of the year,” said an organiser from Friends of Wellington Park. “On a good day we’d expect thousands of people but we’re British so we’ll soldier on.”
The regular Sunday afternoon free concerts in the Park, all organised by the Friends, begin on June 5th with a visit from the Taunton Concert Band and continue every weekend until August 28th, from 2.30 until 4.30.
“We’re very proud of the fact that for the past three years the concerts have been self-supporting and we haven’t needed to go to the town council for a grant,” said a former Friends treasurer.
