With just two weeks to go until Barclays bank closes its Wellington branch, its rival NatWest is proposing to install a combined telephone kiosk and ATM on the pavement outside the former Post Office – replacing the existing phone box. At present NatWest is still operating one ATM on the outside of the Fore St banch it closed last September.
However, the need for secure access to the empty building to top up the ATM with cash means that agents cannot show prospective purchasers around the Grade II listed building which is expected to go on the market for around £250,00. If planners approve the kiosk then the bank, still publicly owned after the 2008 financial crisis, can remove the ATM and sell up.
“Following the closure of the NatWest branch within Wellington, it is noted that there are a lack of 24 hour cash withdrawal facilities within the town. The application therefore aims to ensure that 24 hour cash remains readily available to members of the local community,” a NatWest spokesman said.
