Wellington Sports’ Centre is benefitting from Tone Leisure’s ‘Forever Active’ project which aims to encourage new participants – those currently not achieving the government’s recommended 1 x 30 minutes of physical activity per week – to exercise in beginners’ group sessions in the gym. Target groups are adults aged 50+ with a BMI over 25 and adults aged 65+ with long-term health conditions. The sessions are designed to help participants take part regularly in physical activity in a group environment, as a result building confidence, making new friends and improving mental and physical wellbeing.
There are six sessions per week, each of 45 minutes duration – 3 at Wellington Sports’ Centre and 3 at Blackbrook Pavilion in Taunton.
Tone Leisure was awarded £22,108 of Sport England’s lottery money to fund the ‘Forever Active’ initiative, part of a 3 year £2million national project, ‘Make Your Move’, which aims to increase opportunities for participation in sport at local level in innovative and creative ways.
Mark Washington, Contract Manager for Tone Leisure, said, “The funding we have received from Sport England is essential in increasing participation in physical activity in our local community. It will allow us to offer enhanced services to local people, further developing participation in physical activity and improving health in this region.”
