Police are warning that professional fraudsters are active in Wellington and have tricked elderly people out of thousands of pounds in recent weeks through gaining access to debit cards and |PIN numbers.
“They come out with some incredible stories but vulnerable people sometimes believe them,” PC Mick Dunn told Wellington councillors in his monthly police report.
“In one example they asked an 89-year-old person if they could push a wheelbarrow through their house to gain access to a neighbour’s garden. They then tricked them out of around £6,000,” he said.
“Another older lady was offered ‘help’ to pay for her magazines after they noticed through the window that she had a pile on the sitting room table. They gained access to her bank account and defrauded her of around £10,000”
PC Dunn stressed that the police are always willing to offer help and advice on how to keep vulnerable people safe from crime.
