Andrew Govier is Wellington’s Mr Politics. Town, district and county councillor (plus having been mayor of Wellington) Andrew is fighting this week’s election to hold his position as one of only two Labour representatives on Somerset County Council. And even the national media are getting interested in our rural dust-up.
This week Andrew was quoted in the Guardian’s round-up of the county council election battle in Somerset. “Labour activists are fired up too, reports Andrew Govier, fighting to retain his county seat at Wellington. In 2009 Labour gave Lib Dems their tactical anti-Tory support. The coalition put paid to that. A lot of people were keen to stand this time,” Mr Govier told political correspondent Michael White.
And today Nick Clegg was in Taunton, whilst David Cameron was elsewhere in the county. The big two are clearly rattled about the inroads UKIP and Labour could make into their long-term dominance of Somerset county council.
