Plans for re-building the burned-down Merry Harriers pub at Forces Corner have been criticised by Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty officials as more suitable for a town environment than a rural beauty spot.
“The colours, choice and mix of materials indicated on the plans are not typical of the Blackdown Hills, suggesting instead a more urban appearance. Pubs locally tend to be of more simple appearance in either stone or natural, pale render,” commented the BHAOB planning officer in a response to Taunton planners.
Other comments have been more blunt. “From the drawings the new building looks more like an identikit pub on a modern housing estate,” said one local resident.
The proposed new building will occupy the centre of the site rather than flanking the main road as the old pub did. The Merry Harriers burned down last year in a suspected arson attack.
