Club Secretary Brian Wombwell played a really good game against Vic Merrell, another very good bowler. The two were level on 20 shots apiece after 28 ends. They both needed one more shot to win it. Wombwell held his nerve the best and pinched the game with the vital shot to take it 21 – 20.
Two of the top club bowlers, Mike Connor and Martin Speakman were unlucky to come up against one another in the first round of the Handicap. The result went to Speakman who was the player on form on the day, 21 – 6.
Club Chairman Geoff Stamp excelled himself in his battle against the very skilled bowler, Ernie Windsor, winning it in style 21 – 15.
Vic Horne has been playing well recently and he showed off his skills winning a well fought contest with Bernard Barnes, 21 – 8.
The Open Singles:-
Martin Speakman played some very good woods in his first round match against Eddie Dilley. Eddie played well but Speakman was in top form and won it comfortably 21 – 3.
Vic Horne was 20 – 19 up with one to play against Rod Troake and looked to have the winning of it but Troake picked up the vital two shots in the last to cross the line 21 – 20.
Geoff Stamp had been playing well recently bu Ernie Windsor was unstoppable going on to take the game in style 22 – 5.
John Lister was in fine form against new member Richard Whiting who put up a really good fight but could not keep up with Lister who took it 21 – 12.
The Aimee Stanton Pairs
Eddie Norris and Richard Manning played well against Philip Brigden and Barry Vile but not well enough to win it. Brigden and Vile were the victors 21 – 14.
Two of the top club bowlers, Courtney Bowden and Paul Kelly were expected to win against everyone who came up against them but Julia and Lew Stanton had something to say about that and grabbed a fine victory 21 – 16.
New Bowlers’ Singles
Vic Merrell and Philip Brigden had a ding-dong battle in the New Bowlers’ competition but the end result went to Vic Merrell by six shots, 21 – 15.
