Today the Iron Duke officially opened its doors. The Old Town Hall has probably never looked better during the past century. The interior brickwork is beautifully exposed and the timber roof is amazing.
Inevitably the pub furniture and signage gives a slight feeling of “another Wetherspoons” but it’s hard to see how a successful chain with over 1000 pubs can avoid a feeling of familiarity.
On a weekday morning the majority of the customers were older people enjoying a latte – or waiting for one, as the coffee machine had a major hissy fit bang on 11 o’clock – but there were a fair number of young families enjoying an early lunch or a late breakfast.
It’s been a long wait since the first rumours of a Wetherspoons pub over three years ago but the firm has invested over £2m in the project and there’s every sign that they’ve got this one right.
