The Indoor Open final between two of Wellington’s top indoor bowlers was a close and exciting battle for the spectators who filled the viewing area at Wellington Bowling club.
John Lister got the ball rolling straight away capturing three shots in the first end. Nick Channon came back in the second to pick up a faultless four and the battle was joined.
After eight ends Channon led by a comfortable six shots and looked to have the winning of it but back came Lister in the ninth, picking up a 4 to make it 11 – 10 to Nick.
The middle game was very even and by 18th the two were level pegging on 15 shots apiece. Nick Channon picked up five to Lister’s two over the next five ends to take a 20 – 17 lead.
He only needed one more shot to win the game and the competition. Nick put two beautifully bowled woods right on the jack and it looked as though that was the end of it but John Lister played a bowl with weight which picked up the jack which flew into the side ditch. Dead end. He had avoided defeat but the scores still stood at 20 – 17 to Nick.
Immediately the jack was bowled, the bell rang to indicate that it was the last end of the game. Channon just needed one shot, Lister four. John concentrated hard and put three woods within a foot of the jack to hold three shots. Nick bowled carefully with his last wood to get closer to the jack than his opponent but he was too careful and the bowl ended a little short.
Now it was Lister who was under pressure. He knew he held three shots but he had to have four to win it. Channon’s short bowl was in the way on the forehand so he changed hands and bowled a beautiful wood on the backhand side which curved around the front bowls and crept onto the jack to make it four.
John Lister took the applause from the spectators for a brilliant win under pressure but Nick Channon was also applauded for an excellent game. The match was very ably marked by Club President Sylvia Lane who presented new champion John Lister with the Open Championship Shield for 2016.
