One of the local area’s oldest and most popular pubs, The Merry Harriers at Clayhidon, has closed suddenly due to ‘unforeseen health issues’. The car park is now fenced off and a notice says that it will not reopen ‘for the foreseeable future’.
The current landlord, Wesley (Wayne) Sneijder, took over the pub from Reginald and Leslie Payne in 2015 and has continued to operate a successful bar, restaurant and bed and breakfast business until very recently.
The Merry Harriers is one of the Blackdown Hills’ former coaching inns and is more than 400 years old. It is believed to be haunted by a number of rogues from its eventful past.
