The weather forecast for rain and strong wind on Saturday 21st October has forced a last-minute change of plan for celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Wellington Monument.
‘The Story of the Stone’ which was due to take place at the Monument will now be told in St John’s Church, Wellington, from 7pm to 9pm.
The National Trust which owns the Monument and surrounding land commissioned local performance company ActionTrack to work with members of the local community in commemorating the event.
Actiontrack’s Nick Brace and local volunteers have devised a dramatic reenactment which brings to life the story which led to plans being made for a permanent memorial to the Duke of Wellington’s victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.
‘The Story of the Stone’ is a free event.
A planned walk from Wellington town centre to the Monument at 2pm on Saturday 21st October has been cancelled.
