The Governors of Beech Grove Primary School, Wellington, have announced the appointment of Claire Joyce as Head of the school following two days of interviews.
Miss Joyce was Deputy Head of the school but was appointed as Acting Head in September 2017. She replaced Ms Sara Tirrell who had been Head since September 2014.
In their letter to parents announcing Miss Joyce’s appointment Co-Chairs of Beech Grove Governors, Emily Walters and Stephen Miles, said, “As many of you will be aware, we have spent two days interviewing candidates for the post of Head Teacher at Beech Grove School this week.
“It was a very thorough process and everyone involved did an excellent job of making sure the days went smoothly. We had support from a lot of governors, children, staff, some parent representatives, and David Theobald who is the Senior Advisor for Primary Schools.
“We would also like to thank the children, who were a crucial part of the interview process.
“We are delighted to inform you that Claire Joyce was awarded the post, and will be the new Head Teacher at Beech Grove. We are sure you will continue to support her in her role, and we are all excited about her plans to make this a really happy and successful school for all of our children.”
In the last Ofsted report in February 2018 Inspectors paid tribute to Miss Joyce’s work in establishing ‘new ways of assessing pupils’ learning’ and acknowledged that the school had been through ‘a challenging period’. The school was assessed as ‘Good’ in this inspection.
In the schools’ comparison statistics published following SATs tests last year Beech Grove’s pupils were found to be ‘Below average’ in Reading; ‘Average’ in Writing and ‘Well below average’ in Maths.
In December 2017 Ms Tirrell was appointed as Year 4 class teacher for the spring and summer terms at Whipton Barton Federation School near Exeter.
