New swings have been added to the childrens’ playground at the Recreation Ground, with the money coming from developers who completed new housing on Mantle Street.
Two years ago children in Wellington were involved in helping to come up with ideas for improving and updating the playground with funds coming from planning agreements – Section 106 payments made by developers.
At the time there was not enough money available to meet all the children’s wishes and the refurbishment was always intended to be a “work in progress”, with additional items provided when more funds became available.
Since the refurbishment, further S106 off-site contribution for children’s play has been made and, in accordance with the children’s wishes, the Council has installed a pod swing and replaced the ageing flat swings, together with steps on the bank to the younger children’s slide.
The Council intends to supply seating for the play area in the near future and more play equipment in due course.
The latest S106 funds were made available through a housing development in Mantle Street, Wellington.
Cllr Catherine Herbert, who holds the Council’s sports, parks and leisure portfolio, said: “I am sure children will be excited to have the new equipment and see that we are keeping our word in providing what they said they would like. I hope they have loads of fun!”
