New faces at the Wellesley. The town’s historic cinema, much-loved and well-used, has changed hands. Reel Cinemas, operators for the past seven years, have sold the lease to a Devon partnership, of Stuart Cusack and Keith Nash.
Long-term manager Anthony left shortly before the take-over to run the Tivoli cinema in Tiverton. He put a huge amount of effort into improving the Wellesley over recent years but found his relationship with Reel Cinemas, based in Loughborough, frustrating.
The ultimate owner of the Wellesley is the Wellington Arts Association, via an arms-length intermediary known as the Wellesley Trust. “We’re delighted to have Stuart and Keith back in charge at the cinema,” said chairman Geoff Redstone.
“We had a very good working relationship with them when they were the operators prior to Reel Cinemas and I know that they are very sympathetic to our live shows.”
The lease of the Wellesley requires the cinema operator to release the building for around four weeks every year to accommodate shows such as the pantomime in January , the forthcoming Oliver and an autumn show.
