Wellington’s annual sporting pinnacle, the world welly boot throwing championship, was a huge success. Competitors came from as far away as New Zealand and Ireland, plus scores of local throwers. New records were set and the rain held of for once this summer. Organiser Sue White reports:
“We had a fantastic day with, I reckon, over 1,000 people. There was a gentleman from Wellington, New Zealand! A gentleman called Martin Phelan from Freshford, County Kilkenny, Ireland who as part of winning his competition in Ireland was sent over to us to throw – he also opened the event for us.
“Our longest male thrower from 2009, Simon Biffen, (34.6m) came back to reclaim his trophy and did so in style by smashing his record and throwing a massive 36m! Our ladies record was also smashed by Lauren Fellows who threw 24m – our previous longest throw was 23.5m in 2009 by Sarah Edwards.
“We also had a joint competition at 4.30pm with Welbury in Yorkshire for the Sam Turner Prize. It was between our longest male and female throw of the day. We slightly adjusted the rules so that we didn’t allow a run up and they didn’t allow rotation so that we were in line for rules. We added 10m to the longest throw for the ladies so that it was in line with the men.
“We were extremely well supported by local businesses with over 30 stands.
The local businesses gave very generously to our raffle, the proceeds of which are going to GoCommando (a charity supporting Royal Marine Families) but we haven’t totalled up the monies yet.
“I would like to say a massive thank you to my other half Paul Smith for his help ferrying tables, chairs and water around before and after the event and for generally supporting me in the run up to the event and also to the rest of my family and their friends for their support in setting up and running the event without whom the day would never have happened.”
