Merlin Cinemas, the operators of Wellesley Cinema, have joined forces with Wellington Dementia Action Alliance(WDAA) in putting on a nostalgic cinema event on Thursday 18 May to coincide with Dementia Awareness Week.
The community partnership will be kickstarted on Thursday 18th May with the showing of the musical classic movie ‘Singin’ In The Rain’ starring Gene Kelly & Deborah Reynolds. Over 150 seats will be donated to dementia service providers and their clients, free of charge, with further tickets available from the Merlin Cinemas website at £5 each.
It is hoped that the WDAA will continue working with the cinema operator in providing films, theatre and live productions during the daytime to make this a regular event in the calendar.
“I am absolutely delighted at the support that Merlin have given to this initiative”, said Craig Holmes from WDAA. “Our alliance members recognised the need to improve access to some of the facilities and services in the town and when presented with this idea, the management at Merlin quickly came on board. I am particularly grateful to cinema manger, Daniel Taylor, who has been so enthusiastic about hosting the event and how this partnership might develop.
“Our aim is to transform the quality of life of people living with dementia and memory loss, their carers and families, to ensure they are treated with respect and dignity by our community.”
The nostalgic cinema event forms part of the Wellington Dementia Action Alliances, launch programme during Dementia Awareness Week, 14th to 20th May 2017.
