Wellington’s free parking experiment has been given the go-ahead for a six-week trial period later in the summer. Town car parks will be free after 3pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays during the last 3 weeks of August and first 3 weeks of September
Wellington Town Council heard the news at its monthly meeting on 1st July, that the go-ahead has been given by Taunton Deane Borough Council for the project.
Campaigned for by Sally Hooper of Mad Dog, and supported by Wellington Town Councillors and the Wellington Business Association (WBA), this initiative aims to improve footfall in the town centre during the holiday period.
Wellington Town Council will be responsible for producing publicity material, which will be made available through the WBA to retailers who will ensure that their customers are aware of the free parking dates and times.
The WBA will also be responsible for carrying out an assessment on the impact of this initiative on trade in the town.
Ian Stock, Chair of the WBA said: “We are grateful to Cllr Mark Edwards, on the Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays during the last 3 weeks of August and first 3 weeks of September, who negotiated for this initiative to take place, and to Wellington Town Council for supporting it.
“As Taunton Deane Borough Council will be losing revenue over the period of the Free after Three scheme, it is important we show how successful it has been in bringing extra trade into the town. The WBA will be working with Wellington Council and retailers to publicise the initiative to ensure it is successful, and obtain the feedback and data we need to measure that success.”
