Petanque has reached Wellington – but the town needs some players. By an odd coincidence there’s now a impressive new terrain (as the French sport, also known as boules, calls its pitch) but there is no club.
Cllr Bill Sparrow – a keen petanque player until recently at the Honiton club – was approached by the U3A group about starting petanque and was instrumental in suggesting that Taunton Deane might spend some of its Section 106 money that comes from housing developers on a terrain for Wellington.
“I had hoped to take the lead in forming a club and then getting teams together to play in the local league,” said Bill. “but some ill-health recently has meant I recently don’t have the energy for that, so we need to find someone a bit younger to take the project forward.”
So if you know a cochonnet from a jack and have the boules to start a new sports club, get down to a very smart terrain behind the sports centre at The Basins.
