Police are appealing for witnesses to the fatal accident that closed the M5 near Wellington late on Suday afternoon. Officials say a middle-aged man from the Plymouth area died trapped in a car that left the motorway and ended up in a field.
The accident happened just north of J27 and led to traffic being diverted on to the A38, with inevitable long delays.
Officials are hoping that accounts from other drivers may explain what caused the car to leave the motorway, with fatal consequences. Collision investigators want anyone who saw the incident to contact them on police number 101.
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “We would once again like to thank the public for their patience and understanding, and remind drivers to take care in poor weather conditions.”
