Bad weather disrupted Wellington Tennis Club’s plans for its annual Finals’ Day on two consecutive Sundays – the first time members can ever recall this happening.
The committee decided that matches will now be played whenever finalists can arrange them and they will hold presentations on a separate day – with a BBQ weather permitting.
Chair, Sue Rackley said, “It’s been frustrating but we made the right decision as it was too dangerous to play on wet, slippery courts and not much fun watching in the rain either.”
However, Junior Cups were awarded at Saturday’s coaching sessions. Head coach, Dan Sizer, awarded the Best Beginner’s Cup to Sophie Evans, Most Improved Player Cup to Thomas Holwill and Keenest Player Cup to Reuben Griffiths.
One match that was played was the Boys U14 Final. Trying to gain his fourth consecutive title, reigning champion Oliver Kennedy triumphed over Daniel Thorne. In the first set Daniel had set point at 6-5 but Oliver managed to hang on and forced a tie-break which he eventually won. The final score was 7-6 6-1.
