Record entries at Flower Show

With entries up and a record numbers of exhibitors in Championship classes, Wellington Summer Flower Show was judged a success by the organising committee even before it opened to the public at the Alan Rogers Centre, Wellington School, this weekend.

Wellington Flower Show Secretary Sheena Page said, “We’ve had 13 entries in Championship classes this year and cut flowers, fruit, vegetables and all the other lovely exhibits in the hall are up. We’re slightly down in cookery and craft entries but there are more in the children’s competitions so we’re very pleased. It’s actually a pleasant surprise as we feared that the weather might have a knock-on effect on flowers. But there are lots of new exhibitors and the Dahlia Society is back!”

The Flower Show Society – which is 100 years old – organises two shows each year, in spring and again in summer. As well as cut flowers, pot plants, fruit and vegetables there are classes for floral art, cookery, crafts and photography as well as junior classes and family or group projects. Judging takes place in the morning of each show before it opens to the public in the afternoon.

Prestigious trophies and prizes sponsored by Sheppy’s, Rumwell Farm Shop, Chelston Nursery and Willowbrook Garden Centre are awarded to the winners of various classes.

The following were winners of each of more than 400 separate classes in the show:
