The new Budgens Service Station and supermarket on Westpark is due to be officially opened on Thursday 5 March. Wellington Mayor Dave Mitton will cut the ribbon at 9am and the first customer through the pumps will be the owner of a vintage Roll Royce to advertise the Shell garage’s V Power Diesel fuel. “We hope it will pull people in,” explained Operations’ Manager Kevin Knight. A further PR event will take place on Easter weekend – 3 to 6 April – when there will be a Ferrari Formula 1 car on display.
In addition to forecourt services the supermarket stocks an impressive range of groceries, stationery, soft drinks and alcohol and will sell bread and pastries baked on the premises. There is also a large Subway with a comfortable seating area and Costa Express coffee outlet.
For Store Manager Philippa Bath the opening represents a new career challenge as this is her “first proper store manager role” following work with Budgens in Bridgwater. “We’re employing 26 staff here – including those in Subway,” Philippa said, “and all of them are local.” Asked whether final preparations, shop-fitting, staff training and shelf-stocking will be completed in time, she said confidently, “We’ll definitely be ready!”
The service station is the largest in the area apart from Taunton Deane and opens for business at the same time as a further 18 units in the latest block to be built on Westpark have been sold.
