The Sporting Duchess is on the move to larger premises in South St. Owner Joanna Sandow has bought the former Co-op bank premises next door to Teare’s newsagents and applied for planning permission to open up the ground floor and create a retail showroom more suitable for a fashion retailer.
“We’ve been open for six years now and the business has grown,” said Mrs Sandow. “It’s not great to see the banks closing in Wellington but people still seem very willing to support independent traders like ourselves.”
The Sporting Duchess is primarily about women’s outdoor clothing and stocks upmarket brands such as Barbour, Seasalt and Le Chameau. Alpha Studio and Rosso 35 represent beautiful Italian tailoring with fitted jackets, coats, shirts and dresses.
With a new butcher’s shop – Sprague’s – opening in the former Garden Café later this week and a new vaping store taking over the former Cloud 9, Wellington’s town centre is set to look busier than it has for some time.
