When the vexed question of the proposed third tennis court again came before the town council for discussion, councillors expressed dismay at the current bad blood between the sports clubs over the issue.
“I’m amazed at the slanging match going on between the various groups,” said Cllr John Thorne, before adding that in his view as an FA-qualified referee the affected football pitch was already over-size and could be made smaller to avoid detrimental impact to the cricket pitch when it is moved slightly.
“People are standing their ground on this and need to be encouraged to compromise,” he added.
“Between the tennis, football and cricket clubs everyone is throwing their toys out of the pram. We don’t need it,” commented Cllr Gary James.
The council voted unanimously to support the tennis club’s application for a third court, with a proviso that objections from the football and cricket clubs are overcome by agreement.
