Wellington stay top of Toolstation Division One Western despite losing to Keynsham Town on Saturday – but by just a single point. Before their 2-0 victory over the Tangerines Keynsham had lost three matches in a row and might have appeared vulnerable. But their win against Wellington in a tight match – the home side scored two goals within seven minutes in the second half – puts them into second spot in the league and maintains the pressure at the head of the table.
Cheddar’s fine run of 21 matches unbeaten came to an end when they lost 1-2 against Portishead Town – a surprising result that was to Wellington’s advantage. Cheddar drop to third position in the league on 67 points but have a game in hand over Wellington who have only two points more.
In the fight for promotion the three leading teams are now threatened by Hengrove with 64 points after their fine 4-0 victory over Warminster Town.
Wellington play on Wednesday 1 March away at Warminster whilst both Cheddar and Keynsham Town have away matches at the weekend. Supporters of all three contenders – and Hengrove too – will no doubt be watching closely.
