Wellington lost their position at the top of Toolstation Division One Western to rivals Cheddar at the weekend when they could only draw their home match against Oldland Abbotonians – a team lying 19th in the division.
The Tangerines dropped to second despite fighting back from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2. Goals from Danny Carter and Owen McCallum put the visitors into a 2-0 lead at half-time, but Jack Bryant pulled a goal back in the 71st minute and Jack Taylor grabbed the equaliser 12 minutes from time.
Cheddar secured top spot when they won away from home at Portishead and now have 67 points from 31 games. Wellington have 66 points from the same number of games.
Third place Keynsham Town won 3-0 at home to Bishops Sutton and maintain the pressure at the top of the league. Wellington visit the Bristol side next Saturday for a match that promises to be crucial. Cheddar would appear – on paper at least – to have an easier fixture when they play Malmesbury Victoria who are lying at 12th place in the league.
