Finals’ Day at Wellington Tennis Club at the weekend brought a very successful summer season to a close. Club Chair Sue Rackley said, “The club tournament is always a popular event and allows newcomers to dip their toes into competitive tennis for the first time. Due to blossoming junior sessions the committee decided to add 2 new categories – the U14 Girls and Boys Singles Finals, won by Lydia Mitchell and Oliver Kennedy. Other results were:
U18 Girls: Lydia Cross; U18 Boys: Will Mitchell; Ladies Singles: Lydia Cross; Men’s Singles: James Cross; Mixed Doubles: James Evans and Philippa Deem; Men’s Doubles: James Cross and Edward Cross; Veterans Doubles; Philippa Deem and Brian Davenport.”
Tennis continues during the autumn and winter with Junior sessions beginning on Saturday 13 September, a Christmas Junior Tournament, an ‘Improvers’ session on Tuesdays from 7 – 8pm and winter league matches. “I hope to organise more tournaments for juniors as we have a group of very competitive young players. Some of these competitions will be linked to Grand Slam Tournaments,” Sue Rackley explained. “Junior coaching has thrived through the summer with over 50 children attending Saturday sessions at different times. These were so successful that a separate session had to be created on Tuesdays after school to accommodate all the players. 93 players attended a summer camp run by Club Coach Dan Sizer in August.”
“Club membership is now approaching 100 with 6 new members since July and 42 juniors. Our teams playing in the summer league have thrived: the A team won 9 out of 10 matches and were promoted to Division 2, the B team were 3rd in Division 4 and the C team were 3rd in Division 5. We hope to encourage some of our junior players to participate in matches through the winter.”
Courts at the club can be booked at C&C Carpets in Mantle Street.
