Adele and Mark Tarry, owners of The Globe at Milverton, are celebrating 10 years running the award-winning gastro pub on 1 February.
Given the number of pubs that have closed during that period, this achievement is cause for special celebration. They’ll mark the occasion appropriately with lots of ‘specials’, all based around the number 10. Adele said, “There’s a free bottle of wine for parties over 10, at lunchtimes there’s the offer of any starter and dessert for £10 and, on midweek evenings, diners can get 2 x 10% (or 20%) off their bill.”
The Globe’s very popular ‘special events’ open this year with a Curry Night on Tuesday 9 February and a French Night in March. The Specials Board changes weekly and the main menu every 4 to 6 weeks, featuring produce from local suppliers such as Moonbeamsland in Wellington which supplies their pork.
Adele and Mark had experience in pubs, cafe’s and restaurants before coming to The Globe but, in Mark’s words, “were fed up with working for other people”. Initially, they leased the pub but bought the freehold 3 years ago. “During the last 10 years we’ve made local produce a higher priority and really gone into supporting small local businesses and small producers,” Mark said.
“When we came it was more of a wine bar so we’ve changed the look to try to make it a bit more pubby and relaxed. We also have two rooms for guests which we find are booked by people visiting families and friends in the village. We’ve now added a sun terrace out at the back too.”
Running The Globe has become a family venture with Mark’s parents helping. “My father works behind the bar and my mother helps with the children – Sophie (9) and Seb (6) – and makes meringues. We’re very fortunate to have their support as it’s been a challenge running a business during the recession and with two small children,” Mark said.
Asked to look to the future – the next 10 years – Adele said, “We’ll stick to our ethos – keep our food as reasonably priced as we can, vary what we offer and make dishes interesting. We love preparing and serving good food in the best way possible.”
