Wellington Football Club had their lead cut to just a single point at the top of Toolstation Division 1 Western league on Saturday when they suffered a 1-0 defeat away from home at Chippenham.
With Chippenham lying in 18th place in the league this looked, on paper at least, to be a fixture which favoured the league leaders but the loss of three potential points has made the Tangerines’ next match – at home to Devizes Town on Saturday 28 January – one they can’t afford to lose.
Keynsham Town reduced Wellington’s lead to a single point with their 3-2 win against Wincanton Town, although Wellington still have a game in hand. Wellington have 63 points and Keynsham have 62. Cheddar in third place have now put pressure on the two clubs above them with a 3-1 victory against Corsham Town. They have 60 points and have played the same number of matches as Wellington.
With the title race increasingly competitive, next weekend’s home game looks an attractive fixture – one where the Tangerines would welcome strong local support.
