The Wellesley’s single LIVE event in January is the Royal Opera House production of Verdi’s operatic masterpiece, ‘Rigoletto’ which is transmitted on Tuesday 16th January at 7pm.
The tragic narrative involves three main characters – the immoral Duke of Mantua, his hunchback court jester Rigoletto and his beautiful daughter, Gilda.
A curse placed on the Duke by a courtier whose daughter he has seduced with Rigoletto’s encouragement comes to fruition when Gilda falls in love with the Duke. In a tragic resolution, she sacrifices her life to save her lover from assassins hired by her father.
In this revival of the ROH’s 2001 production, Michael Fabiano plays the role of the Duke, Sofia Fomina is ‘an exquisite Gilda’ and Greek baritone Dimitri Platanias is ‘a touching and imposing Rigoletto.’ Critics have particularly praised the duets between the jester and his daughter in which their ‘voices soar gracefully.’
