Wellington’s run in the FA Vase came to an end on Saturday 11 November when they were beaten 2-1 by 2014 FA Vase winners Sholing but they came away from the match with praise for their standard of play and fighting spirit from both their opponents and their followers.
The Tangerines got on the score sheet first after 37 minutes and remained ahead well into the second half. Sholing scored the equaliser on 69 minutes with a goal that was subject initially to a consultation between the referee and his linesman.
The winning goal came in the last minute of injury time when Sholing scored from a free kick. Wellington’s stirring performance was acknowledged by their opponents who said, “They gave us a very hard game and played well.” Wellington’s followers on social media said, “Superb performance from the boys only falling to a winner in the last minute of injury time. So so close.”
Wellington’s next fixture is at home against Westbury United in the Les Phillips Cup on Saturday 18 November. Westbury United are currently leading Toolstation Division One, one level below Wellington.
