Wellington Football Club may have secured promotion to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division after last week’s final home match against Chard but they are still fighting for the league title.
Their thrilling 3-4 victory over 9th placed Malmesbury Victoria keeps them at the top of the table with 89 points, just 2 points ahead of close rivals Hengrove who also won – at home to Almondsbury UWE. Ian Bellinger scored two goals with Jack Taylor and Jack Bryant adding two more.
Third place Cheddar are now out of contention with 82 points and only one remaining fixture on the calendar.
Results on Saturday 22nd April set up a fine finale to the season on Saturday 29 April when both Wellington and Hengrove have away fixtures. The Tangerines play Radstock Town who are currently in 5th place whilst Hengrove meet 10th placed Westbury United. The outcome will determine which team becomes league champions.
The crowd at Malmesbury was the biggest of the day; it is likely that Radstock supporters will turn out in similar numbers next Saturday.
