Wellington’s 0-0 home draw against Hallen on Saturday 24th March brings to an end a difficult week for the club. The team has managed to earn just one point from a potential 6 following the 2-0 defeat away at Clevedon Town the previous Wednesday. This defeat against a side that Wellington have already beaten twice this season could be explained by Clevedon’s higher league position, but the Hallen match might have been seen as a potential 3 pointer – although a tough test, with Hallen just below them in the division before the game. When the two teams met in September the score was 3-3. As it stands, Hallen have overtaken the Tangerines who now occupy 16th spot.
The match was a dour affair with both teams struggling with accuracy and fluency on a heavy pitch. The first half was evenly matched with both teams creating scoring opportunities, but Wellington’s attempts on goal were the more testing in bringing the keeper into play whilst Hallen’s shots were miscued. Wellington’s tactics were to use their wings to put pressure on defenders but crosses lacked the penetration or accuracy to find strikers in scoring positions – and Hallen defended resolutely.
The second half saw an increase in pace and pressure. Both goalkeepers were required to make impressive saves and some feisty tackles produced a couple of yellow cards.
Manager Clive Jones made substitutions – forced by injury and tactical – but Wellington missed a golden opportunity to score when, following a good cross from the right, the striker’s shot was blocked on the goal line. With pressure building on the Hallen goal a further chance was fired over the crossbar, appeals for penalties were turned down and a sitter missed. Wellington should have won if only for the chances created but Hallen were determined opponents.
Wellington’s next match is on Tuesday 27th March away at Paulton Rovers in the Somerset FA Premier Cup. On Friday 30th March – Good Friday – the Tangerines are at home to Bridgwater Town in the league. Bridgwater are currently in 6th position. Kick-off for this match is at 1pm.
