Wellington secured a valuable 3 points from their home match against Longwell Green Sports on Saturday 7 October but it was far from an easy victory.
Longwell Green Sports are languishing at the foot of the Toolstation Premier Division with a results tally that reads Played 11, Won 0, Drawn 0 Lost 11 and might have been expected to provide only token opposition to the home side. But that was far from the case. The visitors played determined and energetic football, did not allow Wellington’s 2 goal lead to discourage them and fought to the final whistle. Their goal in the final 10 minutes of the match may not have made any difference to their standing in the league but it was thoroughly deserved.
The two sides looked evenly matched during the first quarter of the game, both mounting attacks along the wings but lacking ball control and accuracy when it mattered most. Wellington won a penalty after 25 minutes which Sam Towler converted. The second came from a throw-in on the right after a period of sustained pressure on the visitors’ goal, Connor Bryant finding the net from a crowded penalty box.
Longford Green should have scored from a corner at the start of the second half but it was Wellington’s determined attack that led to their team being awarded a second penalty on 55 minutes. A fine save from the goalkeeper prevented Sam Towler adding to his tally.
The visitors continued to mount aggressive attacks – and kept both Wellington’s defence and physio busy – scoring their consolation goal from a free kick in the final 10 minutes.
Wellington now lie 18th in the league. On the evidence of this match alone the team has a stable and solid defence, a busy midfield and a strong right wing but Jack Taylor’s energy, skill and determination are already missed. Who will step into his place?
Wellington’s next match is against Downton in the FA Vase on Saturday 21 October at the North Street ground. Downton lie in mid-table in Division 1 of Sydenhams Wessex League. The next Toolstation Premier League match is against Cribbs at home on 28th October. Cribbs are currently in 7th place.
