Women looking to join a cycling club think (often wrongly) it will be full of testosterone-fuelled; lycra-clad muscle men who want to kill each other on the hills, writes Alice Rimes. This is still partly true, but nestled in amongst those clubs are wonderful people who can teach women and novice riders a lot about cycling.
The Wellington Wheelers have launched an initiative to encourage more women and new riders to join a social cycling club.
Alice, the club’s Social Secretary, who came up with the idea said; “I have always wanted to encourage more women into cycling. It’s the fastest growing sport in the country and I didn’t feel it was right that women should feel intimidated about joining their local cycling club. Female Olympic cyclists are household names now, and it’s great for the Wellington Wheelers to be using this passion and enthusiasm to support new membership.”
Running every Sunday up until early December will be their ‘C group’ rides. The pace will be gentle and the distance will be sensible and suited to all. The ride will be led by an experienced member of the Wellington Wheelers and a café stop will be included within the route.
Alice Rimes comes from a family of cyclists who have been involved with the Wellington Wheelers Cycling Club for the past 20 years. She runs her own cycling blog http://www.helloveloblog.com/ where she writes about her own cycling adventures, as well as helpful and informative posts for ladies looking to take up cycling.
