Plans to close Wellington Children’s Centre could be reversed if enough local people write to county hall and protest, believes Somerset County Councillor Andy Govier. “The centre which is based next to Beech Grove Primary School has been a real asset to the town over the last few years and has supported hundreds of children and their families during that time. The council now plans to shut the centre and relocate its excellent staff to Taunton,” says Govier.
“However, during recent meetings with senior officers at County Hall it has been made clear that if there is local support for the centre then the council could change their mind and keep it open.
“We urge people to make their views known on this subject. We realise that many people in the town may have had little interaction with the centre, but hope that they will acknowledge that supporting children and families is a key factor in delivering the sort of community we want to live in.
“The consultation is now underway and people are encouraged to make their views known. The council has set up an online questionnaire which is available at www.somerset.gov.uk/Familysupportandchildrenscentres but this is quite limiting on the answers you can give, so we feel that it may be better to send an email with your views to FamilySupportService@somerset.gov.uk or in writing to Family Support Service, Somerset County Council, County Hall, Taunton TA1 4DY.
“Staff at the centre are being asked to cover a far greater area with some being expected to do work in West Somerset and Sedgemoor. We have a really committed team working out of the Wellington centre and I am disappointed that the successful work patterns that have had such a positive impact in the last few years are under threat.”
