Genesis Youth Theatre are presenting DAZZLE a colourful, entertaining and challenging show at the Wellington Arts Centre for two more nights, writes Nancy Powell-Brace.
The set is a traditional seaside fun fair with all the stalls we recognise. The coconut shy, candy floss and even the strong man, to name but a few. The setting entices the audience into this somewhat mystical world.
I was fortunate enough to see the dress rehearsal on Monday night and what impressed about this young cast was their commitment. It is a very strong ensemble piece with almost tangible support coming from each and every one of them.
The youngsters playing the leads in the show are accomplished and entertaining showing a real insight in to the characters they are portraying. The roles of Fred Pringle (James Cribbon) and Murgatroyd Megarich (Lucas Thwaites) are a tour de force and both actors hold the audience attention successfully. Lauren Leslie, as Polly Pringle, delivers soulful songs and a sympathetic character which work perfectly.
DAZZLE was a challenging production to choose with some of the songs being quite complicated and exposing any weaknesses in the singer. Fortunately there were very few weaknesses. Genesis Youth Theatre is lucky to have a wonderful team of adults supporting them and driving them on to achieve things they might have thought not possible. Perhaps this is why the youngsters involved feel and look so confident and comfortable on stage.
This production deserves your support. Tickets just £6.00 are still available (though you need to hurry if you want Saturday night) and can be obtained by calling the Box Office on 07724047835
