For parents – and maybe grandparents – looking for activities for children during the long summer break, there’s lots on offer in the town over the coming weeks:
Wellington Sports Centre’s themed programmes for the next three weeks include ‘Animals and Nature’, Cartoon Heroes’ and ‘Farewell to Summer’, all involving a range of art and craft activities, sports and dance in separate morning and afternoon sessions. In the pool children can join the ‘Swimskool’ – learning to swim, stroke improvement, diving, snorkelling and life-saving – all 30 minute lessons.
The Princess Royal Sports Complex is hosting Kidscamps which offer specific sports’ coaching and multi-activity days, archery, rifle-shooting and wall-climbing, plus indoor paintball and beach and Quaywest trips.
At Wellington School young athletes from 5 to 12 can take part in Activate Sports week-long Gold Medal Academy from Monday 12 August from 8.30am to 5.30pm each day. Activities include archery, athletics, handball, basketball, fencing, tennis, badminton and gymnastics.
Taunton Athletics Club is holding free coaching sessions on Wednesdays from 6pm to 7.30pm on Wellington School sports field until 4 September.
At Wellington Tennis Club DSC Coaching is running a week-long Tennis Summer Camp from 19 to 23 August, including cricket and football as well as court-based activities.
Less organised action can be found at Wellington’s brand-new skateboard and BMX park and at the newly challenging playground alongside Wellington Park.
