A local resident whose weekend was seriously disrupted by overnight road works in the High Street has received an explanation and an apology from Western Power.
Victoria Osborne said, “Please, what was going on the in the High Street this weekend? We were awake from 1.30am on Sunday morning because Western Power were digging enormous holes in the street. Noise and their overnight lights were horrendous – all done without notice to householders.
“This would have been nightmare but they only occur during sleep – and we had none! We were dreading the ongoing situation overnight on Sunday because we had to be at work early on Monday. A whole weekend with no sleep – and then back to work!
“How can this have been done with no apology to the householders? Western Power, you should be ashamed!”
Wayne Hitchcott, Taunton Deane Team Manager for Western Power Distribution, explained: “Part of our underground cable network in Wellington developed a fault in the early hours of Sunday morning. We received calls from customers with no supply and responded immediately.
“On discovering the problem we took action to restore electricity supplies to customers which involved excavations to cut the faulty section of cable away and the installation of generators to temporarily restore supplies to some customers. We then continued to work through Sunday to complete repairs.
“Due to the nature of the fault I feel we acted in a very responsible and rapid manner to give the best service possible.
“I would appreciate it if you would further my number (01823 348504) onto any residents who would like to discuss the matter. “
