For fans of opera the live transmission of Verdi’s ‘Macbeth’ from the Royal Opera House to the Wellesley Cinema, Wellington, on Wednesday 4 April offers them a wonderful opportunity to share a production that has been reviewed as ‘astonishing’ and ‘musically formidable’.
Based on Shakespeare’s play, the cast features Serbian baritone Željko Lučić and Russian soprano Anna Netrebko as the two Macbeths and ‘an excellent’ Yusif Eyvazov as Macduff. Phyllida Lloyd directs and Antonia Pappano conducts a production that has attracted wholehearted praise from critics. The power of the two lead singers, the ‘tremendous form’ of the Royal Opera Chorus, the sound Pappano extracts from his orchestra and Lloyd’s staging all suggest that this is an event for music lovers to relish.
The Spectator’s critic, Michael Tanner, said, “At last, a great achievement at the Royal Opera. A magnificent performance in every way. Anna Netrebko gives one of the most stunning vocal performances heard in this theatre for many years.”
‘Macbeth’ LIVE from the Royal Opera House on Wednesday 4 April at 7.15pm. Advance booking on The Wellesley Cinema’s website.
The Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of ‘Macbeth’ scheduled for LIVE screening on 11 April has been cancelled due to the number of stagings of the play running at the same time.
