To complete their half-term project on Ancient Egypt, both Year 3 classes at Wellesley Park Primary School took part in an ‘Ancient Egypt Experience’ led by Neil Heasman of The Time Travellers based in Exeter.
The children, many splendidly costumed as pharaohs, nobles and more humble ancient Egyptians, learned about Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings and handled artefacts both real and replica, distinguishing between them.
In coming to an understanding of the ancient Egyptians’ ritual of mummification, the children learned the reasons why it took place, where it happened and how evidence has been recovered over time, as well as the process itself. They were then invited to re-enact the stages of the mummification ceremony as participants with two willing volunteer ‘bodies’ and attendant priests.
From the evidence of their active participation and engagement, this experience will have reinforced many of the ideas introduced during their project and given them fresh insights – and some fun as well.
