Bailiffs have taken possession of Keeble Bookshop in Fore Street.
The shop was leased by Clive Keeble in April 2013 when he moved his business into the town from Langport. Keeble Bookshop was one of only 26 independent bookshops opened in the country that year.
He opened on 7 days a week throughout the year – including Christmas Day in both 2013 and 2014 as a protest against the decline of independent retailers, particularly but not exclusively booksellers, in the high street. He said at the time, “In recent years competition from distance selling has made the traditional local high street independent close to unviable. It is imperative that quality high street retailers survive and ensure that future generations can be assured of personal service from dedicated booksellers where a diverse range of stock can be browsed and handled prior to purchase.”
Clive suffered a stroke in May 2016 and, despite making a good recovery and returning to the shop, suffered further ill-health in September last year. His shop has been closed since then.
