Local swimmer Beth French, the latest Wellington WI speaker, is an amazing example of how determination can overcome adversity. Beth battled ME for most of her schooldays, spending a year in a wheelchair in her teens, but when a therapist told her it was ‘all in her head’, in order to prompt her to try to deal with it, she decided to fight, drawing up a wish list of things to do.
By the time she was 30, Beth had achieved all of them apart from swimming the Channel, so she set herself the challenge of swimming it and getting back to put her son to bed, which she did.
This swim set her off on her life as an endurance swimmer, and later this year she will start on her biggest challenge yet, swimming seven international sea channels in a year. To date, only six people have completed the Oceans7′s gruelling list over their lifetime, but Beth will be the first person to complete all seven swims in a year if she is successful.
WI members’ time activity continued with the nautical theme – our knowledge of the oceans was tested in a quiz.
This was the second time during the week that members’ knowledge was put to the test, and we were pleased to hear that our two teams which took part in the local round of the annual Somerset WI county quiz took first and second places.
The next WI meeting is on Thursday 18 August, when the speaker will be a First Responder. New members and guests are very welcome to join us, 7.00pm for a 7.30 start.
