Careless drivers should take a big share of blame for the recent space of thefts from cars in Wellington. According to police evidence presented to the town council out of 60 recorded crimes in the past month or so not a single vehicle was broken into – they were all left unlocked.
“The perpetrator has just been opening the doors and rummaging through the car for money or valuable,” a police community support officer told councillors. “There has been no damage to any of the cars involved. People in the town are just not listening to our advice.
“It amazes us just how many motorists are leaving their cars unlocked.”
A suspect has been arrested and released pending further examination of CCTV evidence.
