Are you a pensioner with a good throwing arm? There’s a spot for you at the annual World Wellington Boot Throwing Championship tomorrow. Organiser Sue White previews the event:
“This year’s competition will be opened by the Mayor Mrs Gloria Copley on Saturday 14th September 2013 from 12 noon on the playing fields at Court Fields school, followed by a display by Wellington Majorettes.
“There will be two throwing arenas, a mini welly-throwing area for the younger children, live music including Wellington Silver Band, bouncy castles, children’s entertainers, music, bar, various other trade stands, Harley Owners Group (weather permitting), refreshments and a raffle.
“Various local businesses have sponsored the trophies and medals and this year an Over -Sixties class has been added.
“We aim to keep the costs to the families as low as possible, therefore entrance is free but a charge is made for entering the Welly Boot Throwing – £5 for a team of 6; £1 adults and 50p children.
“Once again our longest throw male and female contestants will be asked to throw off against Welbury at approximately 4.30pm which is when the last entry will be taken, with throwing finishing at approximately 5pm when the prizes will be awarded.
“We also have two contestants coming from Ireland – this is their award for winning their local Welly Wanging event!”
